In a world that effortlessly transports food between continents while fiercely resisting the “transport” of people, a fundamental lie is exposed: goods have more rights than human beings. If we truly acknowledge the law of saving every form of energy – fuel, labour, time, suffering – then it is more rational and more ethical to allow migration than to maintain the fetish of full warehouses behind border fences. Instead of sending food across oceans, we can allow the human body to move to the place where that food is produced and can be eaten. Migration then ceases to be a “problem to be managed” and becomes a tool for restoring balance: the human being goes to the bread, rather than the bread going to financial speculation. The Civilization of Moderation is an order in which the movement of persons is holier than the movement of goods, and the right to a meal is more important than the right to profit from its transport.

Geologists know that continents drift across the globe. With them, climate zones, water resources and possibilities of cultivation are also shifting. The Earth has never signed a treaty of permanence with us – the movement of continents continues even today, and therefore the migration of living beings will not cease. What politics calls a “migration crisis” is often nothing more than the slow pace of geology colliding with the rigid ideology of borders. In the logic of saving all forms of energy – fuel, labour, time and suffering – it is more honest to move people than to waste energy on transporting food across half the planet just to preserve the illusion of local stability. Continents drift, climate shifts, life must follow bread and water. The Civilization of Moderation is the one that dares to admit that the right to migrate is one of the rights of the Earth, not merely a problem of politics.

W świecie, który bez wahania transportuje żywność między kontynentami, a z takim oporem „transportuje” ludzi, odsłania się zasadnicze kłamstwo: towar ma więcej praw niż człowiek. Jeśli naprawdę uznajemy prawo oszczędzania wszelkich energii – paliw, pracy, czasu, cierpienia – to bardziej racjonalne i bardziej etyczne jest zezwolić na migrację, niż utrzymywać fetysz pełnych magazynów za drutem granic. Zamiast przerzucać jedzenie przez oceany, można dopuścić do ruchu ciało człowieka, który mógłby tę żywność skonsumować tam, gdzie powstaje. Migracja staje się wtedy nie „problemem do zarządzania”, ale narzędziem przywracania równowagi: człowiek idzie do chleba, a nie chleb do giełdowych spekulacji. Cywilizacja Umiaru to porządek, w którym ruch osób jest świętszy niż ruch towarów, a prawo do posiłku ważniejsze niż prawo do zysku z jego transportu.

Geolodzy wiedzą, że kontynenty wędrują po ziemskim globie. Wraz z nimi wędrują strefy klimatyczne, zasoby wody, możliwości uprawy. Ziemia nigdy nie podpisała z nami traktatu o niezmienności – wędrówka kontynentów trwa także współcześnie, dlatego migracje żywych istot nie ustaną. To, co polityka nazywa „kryzysem migracyjnym”, jest często tylko zderzeniem powolnej geologii z twardą ideologią granic. W logice oszczędzania wszelkich energii – paliw, pracy, czasu i cierpienia – bardziej uczciwe jest przemieszczać ludzi niż marnować energię na transport żywności przez pół świata, tylko po to, by utrzymać iluzję lokalnej stabilności. Kontynenty wędrują, klimat się przesuwa, życie musi iść za chlebem i wodą. Cywilizacja Umiaru to ta, która ma odwagę przyznać, że prawo migracji jest jednym z praw Ziemi, a nie tylko problemem polityki.
